A house designed by the renowned Vancouver architect Barry Downs has recently hit the market for under $5 million. Early in his career, he worked with another local legend, Fred Hollingsworth, and was part of the West Coast Modernism movement. The house in question, Madrona House, was originally built in 1967 and renovated in 2020, with Downs involved in the renovation process. Now, it's on the market again, for $4.95 million. Tanya and Scott McMillan bought the property in 2017 with the idea of updating the building, and Cedric Burgers was the architect on the renovation. After the renovation, the McMillans moved in during 2020 but are now moving on to pursue a different opportunity, putting Madrona House back on the market. Tanya believes that the house should be sold to someone who truly appreciates the architecture and design. But here's where it gets controversial... Technology has come a long way in the last 60 years, and Burgers believes that, given the opportunity, architects of the '60s would have taken advantage of what's available now to make similar choices.
