Trump Invites All Governors Except Two Democrats to White House Gathering: Full Story (2026)

A White House gathering for governors has become a political tug-of-war, with President Trump initially seeming to exclude Democrats, only to later claim all were invited except two! This situation has certainly stirred up a lot of conversation, hasn't it? Let's break down what's been happening.

Traditionally, the President hosts an annual meeting at the White House with all the nation's governors, a chance for everyone to come together and discuss important issues. This year, the event, scheduled for February 20th, was set to be a significant bipartisan affair. However, things took a turn when officials from the National Governors Association (NGA) initially stated that President Trump was only planning to invite Republican governors.

But here's where it gets interesting... On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump took to Truth Social to set the record straight, or at least, his version of it. He declared that invitations had been extended to ALL governors, with the exception of two Democratic governors: Wes Moore of Maryland and Jared Polis of Colorado. He emphasized that invitations went out to both Democrats and Republicans, stating, “The Invitations were sent out to all other Governors, Democrat and Republican.”

Trump didn't stop there. He also expressed his displeasure with Oklahoma Republican Governor Kevin Stitt, who chairs the NGA, even calling him a “RINO” (Republican in name only) over the misunderstanding. The following morning, Trump continued his criticism of Stitt, referring to him as a “wiseguy” and confirming that he had indeed “invited, not happily, almost all Democrat Governors to the Governor’s Dinner at the White House” – a separate event from the main business meeting.

And this is the part most people miss... Trump's statements seem to contradict the information coming from the NGA. Shortly before Trump's social media post, NGA leaders had indicated that Governor Stitt had spoken with the White House, and an agreement was reached for all governors, from both parties, to attend the February 20th meeting. Brandon Tatum, the CEO of the NGA, even released a statement expressing pleasure that the president would welcome governors from all 55 states and territories, calling it a “valued tradition and an important opportunity to build bridges and hold constructive conversations.”

In an email to his fellow NGA governors, Governor Stitt wrote that President Trump was “inviting all governors” to the NGA Business Breakfast on February 20th. He clarified that the President had been “very clear in his communications with me that this is a National Governors Association’s event, and he looks forward to hosting you and hearing from governors across the country. President Trump said this was always his intention, and we have addressed the misunderstanding in scheduling.”

Even Governor Wes Moore had reportedly received an invitation on Wednesday afternoon, prior to Trump's Truth Social post. A spokesperson for Governor Polis, Shelby Wieman, stated that the governor is “focused on doing what’s best for Colorado, and that includes working with Democrats and Republicans to tackle our greatest challenges.” The spokesperson also expressed disappointment that “states and the federal government working together to improve our lives has been resisted by this federal administration,” but affirmed that Governor Polis would continue to work with fellow governors and anyone willing to help improve people's lives.

The situation with the traditionally bipartisan governors' dinner remains a bit unclear.

Earlier in the week, NGA officials had been informed by the White House that only Republican governors would be invited to the February 20th business meeting. This led the NGA to inform its governors that the business meeting would be removed from their formal agenda. Subsequently, Governor Stitt sent a letter explaining that due to the White House's intention to limit invitations to Republican governors only, the NGA could no longer serve as the facilitator for the event, given its bipartisan mission.

In response to this, a group of Democratic governors had issued a joint statement on Tuesday, declaring they would not attend any White House events if all governors were not extended an invitation.

In his Truth Social post, Trump pointed the finger at Governor Stitt, accusing him of having “incorrectly stated my position on the very exclusive Governors Annual Dinner and Meeting at the White House.” He reiterated that it was “false” that the White House intended to invite only Republican governors.

Governor Stitt's spokesperson, Abegail Cave, responded to these accusations by stating that Stitt had received his invitation on Monday and looked forward to his colleagues receiving theirs that day.

President Trump, on Thursday, continued his critique of Governor Stitt, expressing on Truth Social, “we will soon have a Governor in Oklahoma who knows how to accurately write a Press Release to the Public.”

Now, here's a question for you: Do you think the President's actions are a strategic move to gain political advantage, or is this genuinely a case of miscommunication? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
